Describe your entries before interpreting the total

A screen time calculator can add the minutes you enter, but it cannot decide what those minutes mean. Work, study, navigation, accessibility, creativity, communication, entertainment, and passive background display are different activities even when the same device records them. This page therefore reports descriptive totals and category shares without assigning a healthy limit, productivity score, or diagnosis.

Add up to six rows. Each row has an optional neutral label, average minutes on an active day, and active days per week. The tool multiplies the values, sums weekly time, applies the active weeks you choose, and shows what percentage of the entered weekly total each row represents. It does not connect to a phone, browser, television, console, workplace, or family account.

Choose categories that do not overlap

Categories are useful only when their boundaries are clear. If “work” includes video meetings and you also create a “video meetings” row, the same minutes may be counted twice. The result includes a reminder about overlap because the calculator cannot inspect what happened on a device.

You can organize rows by purpose, device, or context, but avoid mixing systems in one total. A purpose-based set might use work, study, social, and entertainment. A device-based set might use phone, laptop, and television. If a phone is used for work, combining both sets creates overlap unless you have separated the source data.

Optional labels are local text conveniences. Use broad terms rather than a person’s name, employer, diagnosis, account, or private activity. The calculation works just as well with Category A and Category B.

Formula and worked example

For each row:

weekly category minutes = minutes per active day × active days per week

The tool sums all rows. Annual total equals weekly total multiplied by active weeks. Category share equals a row’s weekly minutes divided by the entered weekly total.

Imagine three non-overlapping rows: work screen use at 300 minutes on five days, personal communication at 45 minutes on seven days, and entertainment at 90 minutes on four days. Weekly amounts are 1,500, 315, and 360 minutes. The total is 2,175 minutes, or 36 hours 15 minutes. Across 50 active weeks, the projected total is 1,812 hours 30 minutes.

The average across all seven calendar days is about 310.7 minutes because the weekly total is divided by seven. That average is not a recommendation and does not claim every day looks alike. The category table makes the work row’s large share visible without calling it good or bad.

Now reduce only the entertainment row from four active days to two. The difference is 180 weekly minutes. The scenario demonstrates the arithmetic effect of a stated change; it does not predict whether the change is feasible or beneficial.

Where to get the input values

You may use a rough estimate, a handwritten observation, or a summary from device settings. Calc.you does not import those records. If you use a device report, read its definitions: some products count foreground use, some include background activity, some group overlapping devices, and some reset on different schedules.

Choose a representative window. A vacation week, launch week, illness, exam period, or unusual event may not represent a usual pattern. You can calculate separate contexts rather than forcing them into one annual projection. The active-weeks field exists so a short-term routine is not automatically multiplied by 52.

Important limits

The result is not medical or mental-health advice. It does not determine addiction, sleep quality, attention, eye health, child development, job performance, academic outcomes, or an appropriate limit. Anyone seeking guidance about health or a child should use qualified professionals and authoritative sources that can consider context.

The annual figure is a projection of the entered weekly pattern, not a measured history. Simultaneous use of two screens can be counted twice if entered in separate device rows. Shared screens, audio playing with a screen off, and automatic device classifications can further complicate source data. The calculator reports the model rather than pretending those ambiguities have disappeared.

No device identifier, application name, browsing history, or content title is required or saved. Calculator rows stay in current page state. Copying the result moves it to a destination you control.

Review before acting

Check each row’s label, minutes, and days. Ask whether two rows overlap. Confirm active weeks. Compare the weekly total with the source period and see whether it is plausible. More than 168 hours per week triggers a nonblocking plausibility notice because the sum exceeds one seven-day clock. It may reflect overlap, invalid source values, or genuinely simultaneous screens, so the calculator keeps the arithmetic visible instead of declaring the entries impossible. If you explore a change, modify one row and treat the output as scenario arithmetic.

Frequently asked questions

Does Calc.you read my device usage?

No. You manually enter every value. There is no device connection, extension, upload, or account integration.

What is a good amount of screen time?

This tool does not define one. Appropriate use depends on age, activity, access needs, work, health, and other context beyond the arithmetic.

Why can the total exceed the hours in a week?

Overlapping categories or simultaneous devices can double-count time. Review row definitions; the tool adds a nonblocking plausibility notice above 168 weekly hours while preserving the entered total.

Are category labels saved?

No. Labels and values remain in the current browser interaction and are not added to a profile or analytics event.

Add a small set of non-overlapping rows, calculate the descriptive total, and review the category shares before drawing a conclusion.
